Governor Mark Dayton unveiled the first edition of the Minnesota Opioid Prescribing Guidelines on April 26, 2018. The guidelines were developed by the Minnesota Opioid Prescribing Work Group to develop a set of standards that doctors can use to help effectively treat patients with chronic pain and prevent opioid addiction. The workgroup currently is chaired by Steve Rummler HOPE Network Medical Advisory Committee member Dr. Chris Johnson of Allina Health.
The new guidelines focus on important tactics like prescribing the lowest possible dosage of medication and regularly monitoring patients for opioid abuse and dependence. The guidelines are not requirements, however any prescriber who accepts Medicaid will be monitored for their volume of opioid prescriptions. Excessive prescriptions could lead to expulsion from the Medicaid program.
