Preliminary reports have shown that there were 162 opioid-related deaths in 2017 in Hennipen County—an increase from 2016—and the number is expected to increase yet again.
The office of Hennipen County sheriff Rich Stanek has spearheaded a drug abuse prevention campaign called #NOverdose. The goal of the campaign is to increase awareness of drug dangers, current trends, and prevention. #NOverdose has gained the support of the Minnesota Twins, Minnesota Vikings, and the Minnesota State Fair. The Sheriff’s Office has also partnered with law enforcement agencies, businesses, elected officials, schools and community organizations. They hope to reach as many as possible.
Several counties in the state of Minnesota have filed lawsuits against opioid manufacturers for the public cost of the opioid crisis. Hennipen is among these counties.
