MSU promotes overdose awareness
Stephanie Jordan, an SRHN Community Trainer, hosted an Overdose Response Training on Overdose Awareness Day (Aug. 31st) at Mankato State University (MSU)! MSU’s Center for Rural Behavioral Health partnered with Christian Family Solutions to provide over 100 students and staff the knowledge and tools to administer Naloxone.
Community Trainer Stephanie Jordan is a Licensed Alcohol and Drug Counselor from Christian Family Solution, a faith-based counseling service in Mankato, and led the group training session. Thad Shunkwiler, the Center for Rural Behavioral Health director, hopes events such as this training will spread awareness of the issue at MSU. “Awareness is always step one and step two is to get that life-saving medicine into as many hands as possible,” said Shunkwiler.
Freshman attendee, Saron Lemma said, “I’m taking a health and environment class, and the professor encouraged us to come. I learned a lot. I didn’t know about the access we have to Naloxone or how it works, or how to help someone with an overdose.”
Jacob Price, computer engineering student said, “It makes me feel hopeful that we can get a leg up on this epidemic,” he said. “The more people who learn about it and get trained on the proper response, the more people can be saved.”
We are so grateful for our amazing group of community trainers for helping us educating the entire state of Minnesota on the use and importance of naloxone. We could not do what we do without them.
If you are interested in becoming a community trainer our next orientation session is Tuesday, October 4th, 12pm – 1pm.
