HOPE Forums

A Collaborative Approach to Addressing the Opioid Epidemic in Greater Minnesota.

About

Steve Rummler HOPE Network, the Minnesota Department of Human Services, Opioid Epidemic Response Advisory Council, and area partners are teaming up to address Substance Use Disorders and overdoses in Greater Minnesota through a series of community events collectively known as the H.O.P.E. Rural Forum Series.

These events will bring together providers and members of the public to pool resources and share experience, with a focus on reducing stigma, promoting available services, and addressing barriers to the utilization of prevention and harm reduction strategies, including naloxone. Each Forum will include presentations by regional experts and SRHN staff, and will represent a collaborative effort with local providers, law enforcement, partnered organizations and community members impacted by the opioid crisis.

Why Rural Districts?

There are unique barriers to prevention, treatment, and recovery in rural communities which require additional resources and a collaborative approach to address. Data has shown that the COVID-19 pandemic had a particularly heavy impact on those in need of chemical and mental health services in outstate areas and the health care professionals who provide those services.

  • According to preliminary data, the increase in fatal overdose rates in 2021 were higher in Greater Minnesota than in the 7-county Metro for the first time since 2014. 1
  • Rural areas are notably underserved by treatment providers. 2, 3
  • Accessibility barriers related to travel and cost have prevented many from obtaining tools like naloxone. 4
